The Day of Rest is designed to meet individuals where they are—spiritually, emotionally, and personally. Below are reflections shared by participants who have experienced the program.

Resisting going to “Day of Rest” would be an understatement. I maintained that, for me, a day of rest is staying home, laying on the couch and no phone calls and no interruptions. Since that never happens, getting up, showering and getting dressed, then driving some distance was sure not my idea of rest. Many fellow employees that had gone came back with a positive experience, but I still couldn’t see myself “getting up and driving for a day of rest.” After a year and a half of being asked about it and when I would go, I, with the urging of a few colleagues, decided to just “get it over with” so everyone would stop asking. The experience was totally different than I expected!  It was not about rest; it was about spiritual regeneration, calm surroundings, filling a long-emptied void of prayer, reflection, silence, and shutting the world out. I have never had such a day before. I would urge everyone to at least give it one day. You will be hooked like me on the experience!

I went into my first Day of Rest with hesitation and a sense of both anxiety and guilt for not working. I spent the first few hours working as it was initially so uncomfortable for me to surrender to this experience. As the day unfolded, both the beauty of the environment and the stillness allowed me to finally slow down enough to hear the Holy Spirit. What began as discomfort transformed into a profound and grace-filled experience that reminded me of the importance of silence, presence, and allowing God’s love and mercy to fill my soul.

My second Day of Rest was met with excitement rather than anxiety allowing me to immerse myself in the fullness of the experience from the beginning of the day. I am deeply grateful for the peace and clarity I received, and equally thankful to work for an organization that truly values self and spiritual care. This experience is one I will carry with me, both personally and in the ministry we all serve.

Attending the Day of Rest in Denver was a truly grounding and refreshing experience. It provided me with the time and space to reflect deeply, reconnect with my faith, and restore my sense of balance. The grounds at Sacred Heart Retreat Center are absolutely beautiful, creating the perfect environment for contemplation and renewal. Honestly, you don’t realize how much you need a Day of Rest until you take one—it’s an experience I would encourage every team member to embrace.
